Dermatology practice salary benchmarks

BLS Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics (OEWS) gives practice owners a common employee wage reference when setting offers, reviewing current pay, and testing staffing assumptions against collections and labor margin. Use the occupation and geography that best match the role, then layer in your own schedule, experience, benefits, productivity, and recruiting conditions.

Figures are annual wages and employment estimates from the May 2025 OEWS release. The published median is the 50th percentile. BLS does not publish every estimate for every occupation and state; blank or suppressed cells appear as "Not published by BLS." These estimates describe employee wages, not owner compensation or total practice labor cost. They do not include the full cost of benefits, payroll taxes, recruiting, or practice-specific productivity.

State estimates

Use the data in owner decisions

For recruiting, treat the local estimate as one input to an offer range and document any premium for scarce skills, call coverage, schedule, or a harder-to-fill location. For compensation planning, compare like roles and full-time equivalents before changing pay bands. For margin planning, model compensation with payroll burden and expected capacity; a wage benchmark alone does not tell you whether a position pays for itself.

Using the state pages

  • That gap makes the median and published percentile range useful companions when setting an offer; an average alone can conceal how wages are distributed.
  • This is a useful reminder to model each position against its own production and workload.
  • Include payroll burden in margin scenarios.
  • Check which percentile cells BLS published before using this benchmark in a budget.
  • Its published staff-role figures still help owners price support positions and organize recruitment budgets, while a dermatologist offer needs other documented market evidence.
